Colombian President Says 'I Will Resort to Weapons Once More' if US Invades.

Donald Trump along with President Gustavo Petro have intensified the tone in their verbal conflict, heightening strains bilaterally after US forces targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He has drug factories and processing labs and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump added.

Escalating Tensions and Accusations

Addressing the press on Sunday, the US president suggested comparable armed intervention against Bogotá, asserting the nation is “very sick too” and led by a problematic figure who enjoys creating the drug and distributing it to the US."

While Colombia stands as the world’s largest producer of cocaine, no proof exists implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly connected to the business.

A Deteriorating Partnership

This nation was historically a staunch collaborator of the US in the campaign against drug trafficking and enjoyed wide political approval in Washington, yet ties have soured dramatically following Trump assumed the presidency.

The nation's drug trade is predominantly run by criminal organizations including one major cartel, the ELN guerrilla group and renegade units of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), the majority of whose members demobilised subsequent to a 2016 peace deal.

Petro's Defiant Rebuttal

When asked whether a military operation comparable to Venezuela was on the cards for Colombia, Trump said: "I like the sound of that to me."

President Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who left armed struggle in the last century, categorically refuted the accusations. "I am no illegitimate nor am I a drug trafficker," he declared.

"The US president speaks uninformed. End the false accusations," he expressed in a message.

"Should American forces attack civilians, they will transform into a multitude of fighters in the mountains. If they capture the nation's leader, whom many of Colombians holds in high esteem, they will provoke the powerful force of the people," he admonished.

From Fighter to Leader

He passed a period in his early life participating of the leftist M-19 guerrilla group although reports indicate that he never took part in armed clashes. After demobilizing, he participated in creating a new constitution in the early 90s and eventually served as a prominent senator. He held the office of mayor of the Colombian capital before being elected the nation's highest office.

"I made a vow to abstain from using a gun ... but in defense of my country I would take up the fight," he vowed.

Reinforced Protection along with Widespread Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez reported that the national leader's personal security was strengthened.

Many among Colombia’s political right have allied themselves with Trump's stance, however, leaders spanning Colombian politics have rejected the threats of an invasion against their nation.

Bilateral and Economic Pressure

The US withdrew the president's entry visa after he urged US military personnel to ignore orders that violate law. Months later, it placed asset freezes targeting Petro, the first lady and various close collaborators.

Concurrently as the US increased its troop levels in the region and striking alleged narcotics traffickers against Venezuela’s Maduro, the US also carried out strikes on boats off the Pacific coast adjacent to Colombia.
